Receipts and tax
The invoices Stripe keeps for an organization, the monthly usage statement, and how tax is charged.
Tax is charged once, when money comes in: on a credit purchase and on a plan's invoices. Spending credits is never taxed again, so the monthly usage statement is a record of what your credits paid for, not a bill. It always totals $0.00.
| Document | When | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| Credit purchase invoice | Each completed purchase | The credits bought, tax, and the total paid |
| Plan invoice | Starting a plan, each renewal, an upgrade's prorated charge | The plan, tax, and the total paid |
| Usage statement | Early on the 1st of each month, UTC, for the month before | Every priced call and RPC block, and the credits that paid for them |
All of them are Stripe invoices on the organization's Stripe customer, sent to the organization owner's email. When the owner or their email changes, Stripe gets the new address the next time the organization buys credits, starts a plan, opens Billing details or Invoices, or gets its usage statement. Everything is priced and charged in US dollars.
Credit purchases and plans
Every credit purchase produces a Stripe invoice that serves as its receipt, described as "Odel credits for" and the organization's name. The Credits page lists each purchase under Purchases with its date, credits, Amount paid (tax included) and status. A plan is invoiced by Stripe for each period it runs.
Billing details on the Subscription page opens Stripe's billing portal, where the organization's invoices are listed and its card and billing details are kept. Invoices under Purchases on the Credits page opens the same portal. Both are there once the organization has opened a checkout (paid or not) or received a usage statement.
The monthly usage statement
An organization that spent credits on priced calls or RPC blocks in a month gets one statement for that month, described as "Odel usage" and the month, e.g. "Odel usage, March 2026". A month with neither produces none. The statement lists:
- One line per server and price: the server, how many calls, and the price of one. A server whose price changed mid-month has a line for each price.
- One line per side the month bought RPC blocks for, "Extra RPCs, 100K block: calls you make" or "…: calls your servers answer", with how many.
- One negative line per kind of credit that paid: "Odel credits applied" for purchased credits, "Subscription credits applied" for a plan's included credits, "Leased credits applied" for credits an organization granted you.
The negative lines cancel the positive ones to the cent, so the statement is $0.00 and marked paid. No tax is added to it.
Tax
Stripe calculates tax at Checkout, for credits and for plans alike. Prices are shown before tax, and tax is added on top where it applies. At Checkout you enter:
- A billing address. It's required: Stripe works the tax out from it.
- Optionally, a business tax ID such as a VAT number.
The name and address you enter are saved to the organization's Stripe customer and used on its later invoices. A refund returns the tax in the same proportion as the price; see refunds.
