Changing plans
Starting, upgrading, downgrading and cancelling a plan, and what each one charges.
Going up happens at once and is charged now. Going down or cancelling waits for the end of the plan's month and charges nothing. All of it happens on Account → Organization → Subscription, and only the organization's owner can do it.
Starting a plan
On Free, the Compare plans table has Upgrade to Basic and Upgrade to Pro. Either one opens Stripe Checkout, where tax may be added. The plan and its first month's included credits start once the payment goes through. Leave Checkout without paying and nothing is charged.
Changing a plan you have
Each column's button (Upgrade to Pro, Switch to Basic, Cancel plan) opens a dialog that shows the charge or the date first. Nothing changes until you press Pay … or Confirm.
| Change | Takes effect | Charged now | Included credits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upgrade | at once | the difference for the rest of the month | the new plan's, for the rest of the month, replace the old plan's; old credits spent ahead of the refunded time come off them |
| Switch to a lower plan | end of the month | nothing | the current ones last until they expire; the lower plan's from the next month |
| Cancel plan | end of the month | nothing | expire at the end of the month; purchased credits stay |
| Cancel and refund | at once | nothing; part of the month is refunded | go with the plan |
Worked example: an upgrade mid-month
A Basic plan ($12, 5 credits) renews on 1 June. On 16 June, with 15 of its 30 days left, the owner upgrades to Pro ($25, 20 credits).
- Pro for the rest of the month costs $12.50; the unused half of Basic is worth $6.00. The dialog asks for Pay $6.50 (more where tax applies), charged to the card on file.
- What is left of Basic's 5 credits is removed.
- Pro's credits for the rest of the month are added: 20 × 15/30 = 10 credits, expiring 1 July.
- Basic credits spent ahead of the refunded half come off them. Had all 5 been spent by 16 June, 2.5 more than Basic's first half covers, Pro adds 10 − 2.5 = 7.5 credits.
- On 1 July the plan renews at $25 with 20 credits.
If the card is declined, the dialog shows the error and the plan stays as it was.
When a change is refused
- An unpaid invoice. An upgrade is refused until it is paid: "This plan has an unpaid invoice. Pay it in Billing details first, then upgrade."
- A plan already set to end. Switching to another plan is refused until you undo the cancel with Keep ….
Undoing a scheduled change
A downgrade or cancel shows on the plan card as "Changes to Basic on …" or "Ends … and won't renew.", and the target column shows From … instead of a button. Keep Pro (or whichever plan you are on) undoes it, and the plan renews as before. An upgrade, another downgrade or a cancel replaces a downgrade that is already scheduled.
Cancel and refund
Cancel and refund ends the plan now instead of at the end of the month and refunds part of it; refunds covers how much.
Billing details
Billing details, shown once the organization has opened a checkout (paid or not) or received a usage statement, opens Stripe's billing portal. It handles the card, the billing name, address and tax ID, and past invoices. Plans cannot be changed or cancelled there; do that on the Subscription page.
What each plan includes is on plans.
